Back

Thursday 6th June saw students and staff from King's Leadership Academy Warrington and King's Leadership Academy Liverpool come together to honour the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings led by Sqn Ldr Roberts and Flt Lt Doherty. The event brought together cadets, students and staff in a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought during World War II.

Clad in their immaculate uniforms, the cadets exemplified our ASPIRE values as they stood in formation, ready to commemorate one of the most pivotal days in history. As the parade progressed, the cadets demonstrated their drill skills with precision and pride. The rhythmic sounds of marching feet and the sharp commands of their leaders echoed across the school grounds, creating a powerful and poignant atmosphere.

Year 7 student, Jessica Santos marked the occasion with a rendition of the last post on the trumpet. Jessica, who has been playing the trumpet since the age of 9, delivered a spectacular performance, which was followed by a minute of silence, during which attendees reflected on the sacrifices made by so many for the freedom enjoyed today.

Of the event, Head of Personal Development at the Great Schools Trust, Sqn Ldr Ted Roberts said, “Today, we honour the heroes of D-Day not just by remembering their actions but by striving to embody their courage and resilience in our own lives.”

Year 9 student, Harry Mawer, from King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool was one of two flag bearers during the parade, responsible for carrying the Great Schools Trust Combined Cadet Force banner. Meanwhile, Year 8 student, Rome Lowe carried the King’s Leadership Academy Warrington Contingent Banner. Rome expressed his enthusiasm not only for the ceremonial event, but also the opportunities he has been afforded at a Royal Airforce cadet during his time at King’s Leadership Academy Warrington.

“Today was a valuable experience for all of the cadets. I felt extremely proud to be involved in such an important event. My experience of being a cadet during my time at King’s Warrington has led me to want to join the Royal Airforce as an apprentice at 16. Days like today will only help strength my application, as I can talk about the real-life experience of being a unformed cadet and the role I have played.”

As the parade concluded with the lowering of the flags and a final salute, it was evident that the event had left a lasting impression on all who attended. The Great Schools Trust D-Day Parade at King's Leadership Academy Warrington was more than a ceremonial event; it was a heartfelt expression of gratitude and a powerful educational experience for the cadets. It also reinforced the importance of remembrance and the role of education in keeping the legacy of the past alive for future generations.

The Great Schools Trust D-Day Parade was a fitting tribute to the past and a hopeful reminder of the enduring spirit of remembrance and unity.
